Track & Field is perhaps the most "labor intensive" of all sports. Many officials are required to conduct and to supervise the various events. Others are needed to record, verify and certify results. Additional people must log entries and direct athletes to their events. Whether there are only a few, hundreds, or thousands of participants, the nature of the sport imposes heavy personnel demands.

In contrast, with Basketball, four to six competent and qualified persons could conceivably conduct activities all day (and/or night). By alternating duty shifts between the scoring table and the floor of the court, they could effectively serve dozens of athletes on many teams in several games while maintaining their own mental and physical health.

THE PROBLEM

The finish line is as critical a part of a Track & Field meet as the starting line. Any inaccuracies or inefficiencies here would be grossly unfair. Undetected, uncorrected errors could nullify the efforts of athletes, coaches and other officials. The resulting frustration might prove extremely problematic and ruin a meet of otherwise outstanding quality.

THE SOLUTION
