MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Scholarships funded by a major grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are being offered to qualified applicants to the Gates Millennium Scholars program.

Information should have been distributed via the various schools and colleges. Just in case you have not been informed, or if you need updated information, their Web site URL is:

http://www.gmsp.org/

Hopefully this information proves helpful. Educated young people are an excellent investment in our future (and it's a whole lot cheaper than jails and cemetery plots - I'm getting tired of the evening news).

Best regards,
The Editor,

"STRIKE TWO" for safety!!!
LIGHT RAIL & AUTO CRASH AT MLK
SECOND WRECK SINCE SYSTEM OPENS

In a late breaking news item, Intercity LAN has learned that there was a collision between a light rail train and an automobile at the unprotected grade crossing at MLK Drive in Jersey City, New Jersey. The wreck took place shortly after 1 AM on June 20, 2000. It was the second automobile - train collision since the system was opened on April 15 of this year. The first one occured near the Exchange Place station in downtown Jersey City, at another unprotected crossing.

A number of people have repeatedly expressed safety concerns about the lack of crossing gates and signals at the busy MLK Drive crossing. Area residents have sent signed petitions to New Jersey Transit. Letters have been sent by many people to New Jersey Transit, elected public officials and local newspapers about the safety issues. One expression of concern and outrage is found on the Web site of the Hudson Alliance for Rational Transportation. Writers have included area school children, community activists and even the Editor of Intercity LAN. On April 15, New Jersey Transit representatives told our Editor, that they would conduct a "diagnostic study" into the need for safety measures at the MLK Drive crossing. GRAND JURY:
NO CHARGES FILED IN DEATH
OF MICHAEL ANGLIN

A Grand Jury was empaneled in Hudson County to investigate the death of Michael Anglin. On May 25, 2000 it returned a "no bill" decision. There were many irregularities in the handling of the case and widely varying accounts of what happened on the night that the 15 year old died from a single gun shot. The ruling indicates that the grand jury found that there was no proof of crime and that the shooting by the police officer was determined to be accidental.

The family of the young man and advisors are appealing to Federal authorities for action in the controversial matter.

A letter from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to our Editor indicates that that agency is looking into the matter. That communication was in response to A Letter to the President sent on February 24, 2000.

SUMMER YOUTH EVENTS
Brought to you by the Tri-State Voice Christian Newspaper

JAMMIN' WITH THE KNICKS

New York Knicks Alan Houston, Charlie Ward and Andrew Lang recently announced their participation in Jammin' Against the Darkness at Madison Square Garden on August 19.

Jammin' Against the Darkness is a crusade aimed toward youth and basketball fans. On the Garden hardwood, players will showcase their skills in an NBA- atmosphere with lasers and lights, slam dunks, a three-point shootout and pickup games. Later in the evening, they will share testimonies before a salvation message is presented. There will also be a basketball tournament and street festival during the day of the event.

"It's going to be huge to do something like this in one of the best cities in the world," said Houston. "I thank God that He has put me in this position to make an impact. We have an obligation to stand up for Christ."

CitiVision and Concerts of Prayer Greater New York are two of the many local ministries who will be working together on Jammin' Against the Darkness.

CitiVision has a basketball camp (Hoop Heaven) that reaches inner city kids with the Gospel.

Churches are being encouraged to sponsor the event or buy tickets ($10 each) to give away to those needing Christ. Volunteers (altar workers, ushers, etc.) are also needed.
For information, call CitiVision at (212) 567-6411.

Minister Declares New York to be the
"MISSISSIPPI of the NEW MILLENNIUM!"

Minister Conrad Muhammad the WLIB radio host of the "One on One" broadcast has declared New York to be the "Mississippi of the New Millennium" because of the long train of Human Rights abuses in that state.

Many community activists share his outrage including Rev Al Sharpton and the leadership of the National Action Network who have called for Federal intervention into a series of cases reminiscent of the atrocities in America's deep south states during the 1960's.

In Wake of New York Police Killings
PRE-PAID LEGAL PLAN IN HIGH DEMAND

Since the Amadou Diallo murder trial verdict in Albany, two unarmed civilians have been slain in encounters with New York City police. In addition to widespread community outrage, there has been a great increase in demand for the insurance offered by Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc.

In addition to comprehensive legal coverage offered to families across the nation since 1972, a new service was added a few months ago. Called the Legal Shield, this added feature provides 24 hour response by a major law firm in the event one has one of those "BWB - Breathing While Black" encounters with law enforcement personnel. Depending on the subscriber's plan and state of residence, this additional coverage is either free or at a very nominal extra charge ( for example, $ 1.00 per month in New Jersey.)

The Legal Shield was inspired by Tony Brown, producer of Tony Brown's Journal, who first presented the concept to the company. More information is available from his office at (212) 575-0876, ext 700 or 705 or on his Tony Brown Productions Web site.
